Mngqithi of the Sundowns on why they are praying for Shalulile

Last season Peter Shalulile was chasing the coveted top scorer gong and in the last league match against Cape Town City, he lingered around the area waiting for his teammates to supply him and only managed to score one goal .

He’s missed a shot from Bradley Gorbler’s 16-goal tally, but this time around, the stakes are higher than what is chasing Collins Mbesuma’s 25-goal league record. Shalulile is three goals from equaling ‘Ntofo Ntofo’s record and has as many games to rewrite history.

“Peter is a very focused player and all our wishes and prayers are for him to achieve the unthinkable,” said Mamelodi Sundowns manager Manqoba Mngqithi.

We are talking about a great guy who is very busy at his job and is one of the most professional players I have ever worked with. He always makes sure he does well for the team. Not only when it comes to goals, but he is a very important member of our defensive structure. He is the first player on our defense due to his high blood pressure, “he added.

The Sundowns will face Stellenbosch and Royal AM in the penultimate and final game of the season respectively, but before these they will visit old foes Kaizer Chiefs and everyone in Chloorkop would like to see the Namibian get his name on the scoresheet. But if he doesn’t, it won’t be a train wreck as he has already secured a record by matching the second Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot.

“We don’t want to give Peter unnecessary anxiety. If he scores it will be great and we will try to help him in any way we can. The other players are completely behind him because he worked hard, ”Mngqithi said.

“We would like to see him achieve that goal, but it’s not primary in our thoughts. We want to make sure we give our all and support Peter as much as possible without putting too much pressure on him to the point that he starts playing for himself for the goals and no longer for the team, ”added Mngqithi.

Shalulile’s teammate Aubrey Modiba is looking forward to receiving his second league winner medal and, having been on the other side for a while at SuperSport United, he now understands the intricacies of winning the championship.

“What I understood is that winning the championship is not easy. We had to fight and make sure we do well and make sure we outsmart the opponents, which is what we plan to do against the Chiefs. We need to make sure we are doing the basics correctly and doing what is required. Our work has been very good because every match is tough and we have to continue like this against the Chiefs, “Modiba said.
