Ukrainian forces found the bodies of 44 civilians trapped under a building in Kharkiv that the Russian military destroyed in March, a Ukrainian official said.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synehubov announced the discovery on social media on Tuesday, calling the discovery further evidence of this. Russia civilians intentionally targeted.
“This is another horrific war crime of the Russian occupiers against the civilian population!” Synehubov said.
The exact location of the destroyed five-story building was not given, only that it was in the Izyum region, he said.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington DC-based group, said on Saturday that Russian forces had been pushed back to Kharkiv and that they were intentionally destroying the bridges as they exited the region.

The destroyed bridges indicate a “successful Ukrainian attack” as it indicates Russia’s intention not to return to the area, the ISW report said.

“Armies generally only destroy bridges if they have largely decided that they will not attempt to cross the river in the other direction anytime soon; it is therefore unlikely that Russian forces will initiate operations to retake Kharkiv’s liberated northeastern suburbs. Ukrainian forces in the near future, “the report said.

The weakening of the Russian military state and running out of supplies could also indicate an inability to defend the area, the think tank predicted.
“Given the current rate of Ukrainian advancements, Russian forces may not be able to prevent Ukrainian forces from reaching the Russian border, even with further reinforcements,” the ISW report said.
