VIDEO: Shepherds lead their flock in the center of Madrid

The bleating and bells of around 1,200 sheep and 200 goats took over in central Madrid on Sunday morning as part of a festival that recreates the pastoral practice of moving cattle to new pastures.

The organizers of the Transhumance Festival make a symbolic payment for the right to use the herdsmen’s route through the capital. The payment, presented to the Madrid city hall in the currency of medieval Spain, consists of 50 maravedi, as indicated in an agreement between the city and the shepherds dating back to 1418.
