Dis-Chem launches extended health insurance: that’s how much it costs

Pharmacy retailer Dis-Chem has launched a second medical insurance offering – Dis-Chem Health Gap Cover – which provides for the payment of any shortages incurred during medical treatments and procedures.

In March, the group launched Dis-Chem Health, a health insurance offering with premiums starting at R431 per month for the Core plan and rising to R591 per month for the Plus plan with additional coverage options available for coverage. of accidents and medical emergency diseases.

Dependent children start at R302 per month per child, while accident coverage starts at R185 per month for adults and R100 per month for children.

The group said in a statement Wednesday (May 11) that boundaries within the health sector mean that the gap between what’s covered by membership in medical care and what’s in a member’s pocket is widening. .

This results in a marginal value and higher frequency of medical care shortages, which are often unforeseen and occur retrospectively.

“The traction has been strong in the two months since the launch of medical insurance and the adoption has exceeded our expectations. The success rate so far supports our view of the market and Dis-Chem’s important role in promoting much wider access to affordable, quality healthcare, “said Rui Morais, Chief Financial Officer of Dis -Chem.

“Gap Cover is available to existing members of any medical care and provides peace of mind by protecting them from unexpected missed payments for medical care. We are very aware of the rising cost of living and growing financial pressures on consumers.

“A key differentiator of the Dis-Chem Health Gap Cover is that premiums are priced on an age and per person basis, rather than a fixed cost per household. This pricing structure makes premiums more affordable, more widely accessible, easier to understand and transparent, ”Morais said.

There are two options:

  • Base: Price from R190 per month for the main insured, R65 for dependent adults and R18 for dependent children under the age of 18. This is the standard Gap Cover plan which covers tariff deficits of up to an additional 500%, sub-limits, dental reconstruction, as well as benefits for Family Protector and Hospital.
  • Summit: Price from R235 per month for the main insured, R95 for dependent adults and R25 for dependent children under the age of 18. This is the complete gap coverage plan, offering additional benefits, including coverage for oncology.

“Our focus on healthcare has evolved from in-store clinics to a much broader offering that includes telemedicine, medical insurance and now gap coverage. Dis-Chem is well placed to play a leading role in extending access to primary health care to a much larger and underserved segment of the population, “said Morais.

As with the initial launch of medical insurance, the gap coverage offer will be managed by Kaelo Risk and will be underwritten by Centriq Insurance Company Limited.

Medical insurance offers members protection against the unexpected costs of daily health needs and some medical emergency accidents and illnesses.

Although it is not a medical program, it does not offer the same benefits as a medical program, and it is not a substitute for a medical program, medical insurance is a good option for those who cannot afford medical care enrollment, Dis-Chem pointed out. .
