Famous South African economist Mike Schuessler has died.
Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association, where Schuessler worked as an economist, said Tuesday morning that he learned of the death from Schuessler’s family.
Kelly said in a statement that Schuessler was struggling with his health. Schuessler said 10 days ago, in a tweet from an inflation chart, that he “was doing it as a service today because he’s still sick but he’s coming back now – beating cancer.”
SA inflation below world inflation for the first time in 18 years. what does it mean for the edge? Is SA the lucky country this year? Do this as a service today as if you were still sick but coming back now – Beating the cancer pic.twitter.com/Xs7H9fndTE

“Our sincere condolences go out to Greta and her family. We will miss you Mike,” said Kelly.
“A big supporter of the industry has fallen.”
Schuessler founded Economists.co.za in 2005. Schuessler has been South African Economist of the Year twice since 2005 and finished fourth in 2010 in Reuters’ economic competition, according to his website.
