Labor’s ‘massive signal’ to people smugglers: Karen Andrews

Shadow Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews says Labor’s approach to boat turnbacks in the lead-up to the election was a “massive signal” to people smugglers. Ms Andrews said the Labor government took to the election a “dismantling of Operation Sovereign Borders”. “What the Labor government did in the lead up to the election is say that they didn’t support temporary protection visas,” she told Sky News Australia. “So that was one pillar gone out of Operation Sovereign Borders – that was a massive signal to the people smugglers, that under a Labor government, Australia would be open.”
