It was an alarming scene for the Houston Astros when right pitcher Jake Odorizzi suddenly collapsed during the fifth inning of Monday night’s game against Boston Red Sox and was eventually taken off the pitch in what the team described as “leg discomfort”.

The 32-year-old All-Star appeared to be running towards first base when he fell after taking a few steps from the mound. He rolled over in apparent pain, grabbing his left leg before being helped onto a stretcher and taken off the pitch.

“He’s probably doing better than he looked on the mound,” coach Dusty Baker said after the game, via MLB.com. “Tomorrow he has to go and have the doctors analyzed, so we’ll have more news tomorrow. He’s on crutches and he was on a boat, [but] he’s in a good mood so … let’s hope for the best. “

Odorizzi entered the game with a series of 15 2/3 innings of shutout, but the Red Sox would have won 6-3.

“He came to the pitch in a great mood, in great shape, and was throwing the ball great. You know he’s a strong guy,” added Baker. “This is a temporary setback. We still have a long way to go and hopefully we will find him back and he will come back as he left.”
