No. 1 seeded El Camino Real wins the opening of the City softball playoffs

Jodi Borenstein, the seventh year softball coach for No. 1 seeded El Camino Real, asked Wednesday afternoon if he felt additional pressure for the opening game of the City Section Open Division playoff team considering former Hall of Fame coaches Neils Ludlow and Lori Chandler were in attendance . After all, they had led many of the school’s 17 City league teams.

“I love it,” he said. “I love the support”.

El Camino Real went on to secure a 14-4, five innings win over Eagle Rock. Pitcher Brooke DeSmet gave up a shot. Courtney Cohen had a two-run single in the first inning and finished with two hits. Sofia Fisher also had two hits.

The Royals advance to next Tuesday’s semi-finals against another 17-time champion, San Pedro, who defeated Banning 8-1. San Pedro pitcher Lilly Gonzalez pitched five goalless innings. Madison Fao had four RBI.

The other semifinal will meet n. 6 Carson versus No. 7 Kennedy. Carson defeated Birmingham 7-2. Kennedy upset no. Granada Hills 2-seeded 7-6. The Golden Cougars opened a 6-0 lead. Granada Hills equalized the score, 6-6, but Kennedy took the lead at the top of the seventh.
