Al-Jazeera journalist dies following controversial West Bank incident

An Al-Jazeera reporter was killed Wednesday in the West Bank under controversial circumstances, prompting an investigation, officials said.

Shireen Abu Akleh, a well-known journalist in the area, was pronounced dead after being shot in the head during a news report in Jenin city, officials said. She was rushed to a local hospital and died shortly after.

The circumstances of his death have been contested as Palestinian and Israeli Officials disagree on who is responsible.

Nida Ibrahim of Al Jazeera, a correspondent in the West Bank, described the death as “a shock to the journalists who worked with her,” the outlet said.

“What we know for now is that the Palestinian Ministry of Health has announced his death,” added Ibrahim. “Shireen Abu Akleh, was covering the events unfolding in Jenin, notably an Israeli raid [in] the city, which is located north of the occupied West Bank, when it was hit by a bullet in the head “.

An excited Ibrahim also described Abu Akleh as a “highly respected journalist” who has been with the company since 2000.

Another journalist, an employee of the Al-Quds newspaper, was also shot and taken to hospital. The reporter is in stable condition, according to the relationship.

The two wore bulletproof vests, often worn by members of the press while in war zones at the time of the incident.

The Palestinian authorities promptly accused the Israeli army of shooting Abu Akleh to death, which they claimed was a deliberate act.

The Israeli military, however, disputed the claim and said they were hit by heavy fire and attacked with explosives when they returned fire. The military also said it was possible Abu Akleh was shot by Palestinians during the initial barrage.

Israel is “investigating the event and examining the possibility that journalists were shot by Palestinian gunmen,” its military said.
