While media attention has focused on Barnaby Joyce’s split in urban areas, his campaign is working effectively in regions with little scrutiny.
There are two Barnaby Joyces in this election.
In the cities, there is Barnaby, the pantomime villain, the coal-loving rural farmer, who alone holds the Morrison government hostage for climate change and pushes a few moderate liberal voters into the arms of independents.
But in the bush, there’s Barnaby, the retail politician, wandering the country handing out millions for the Nationals’ classic boondoggles.
