SPECIAL REPORT: ‘Hunting Evil: The Killing of Al Qaeda’s Chief’

Sky News has spoken to former US military and intelligence senior officials and revealed details of how one of the world’s most wanted men was tracked down and how Ayman al-Zawahiri’s death changes the global fight against terrorism.

US President Joe Biden this week announced the head of Al Qaeda – and one of the masterminds behind 9/11, which killed thousands of people and devastated the country – was killed in a drone strike in Kabul.

According to a US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, CIA operatives have been on al-Zawahiri’s tail for around three years and have been on high alert since last August’s withdrawal of US troops in Afghanistan.

In April, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan briefed Joe Biden and a plan was set out to kill the Al-Qaeda leader.

At the start of July, the plan was delivered to the President, with a box presented to him which officials say contained a scale model of al-Zawahiri’s house.

On July 25, Biden gave the order to execute the plan.
