UK strengthens defensive alliance with Sweden and Finland as countries fluctuate in NATO membership

The UK on Wednesday strengthened its defense alliances with Sweden and Finland in one move strengthen European security to the light The Russian aggression on the eastern flank of the continent.

“We made history today by signing a joint declaration of solidarity to strengthen our security and defense ties and bring our nations even closer together,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a tweet after meeting with his Swedish counterpart. “We are literally and metaphorically in the same boat”.

The agreements will not only provide Sweden and Finland with assurances that the UK will come to their aid should it be attacked by Russia, but will send a warning signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Traditionally neutral nations tried to join the 30-member NATO alliance after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February.

Ahead of the raid, Russia has repeatedly asked NATO to block Ukraine’s membership of the military alliance and deny it access to the Article 5 statute, which states that an attack on a nation will trigger a response from part of the whole alliance.

Ukraine did not become a NATO member, but the military alliance supported Kiev throughout the war by providing billions of dollars in defense and humanitarian aid.

Putin has long considered the NATO alliance to be among his greatest threats despite relatively calm geopolitical relations prior to the invasion of Ukraine.

Western officials have repeatedly stated that Putin’s goal was to dismantle NATO and recapture former Soviet territory by launching a major military offensive and causing the largest humanitarian crisis since World War II in Europe.

But NATO has shown a united front and now other European nations are looking to the alliance to strengthen their security guarantees.

Last month, Moscow threatened that if Sweden and Finland joined the military alliance, it would place nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles along the western border.

“What we are emphatically saying is that in the event of a disaster or an attack on Sweden, the UK would come to Sweden’s aid with whatever Sweden requested,” Johnson said after meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena. Andersson, Reuters first reported.

Wednesday’s agreements mean Sweden and Finland will be guaranteed security defenses from the UK while their NATO membership applications have been completed.

The United States and Germany have already decided to support the Northern European nations against Russian aggression.
